Making Stuff Go Viral
There are two key strategies to increase the virality of your message: emotion and bribery.
First, let’s talk about emotion. According to Spartz, “In general, you have to be awesome to be viral. More emotion equals more awesome equals more viral. High valence emotions are the best kind of emotions. These are the ones that make you feel up, such as surprise, humor, or personal interest. To get people to share, you have to get enough of those emotions. You can elicit an emotional response with bits of information, pictures, videos, or headlines that literally make you lean forward in your seat. And, it doesn’t have to be positive emotion. Anger is one of the most powerful emotions that can be harnessed for virality.”
Here are a few of the proven techniques for engaging human emotion in order to get people to share, share often, and share quickly. You, of course, need to figure out how these principles would apply to your content. By the way, if you think you are not in the media business, think again. All businesses today are media businesses. If you have customers that you need to communicate with, you are in the media business. If you have a brand, you are in the media business. It doesn’t matter if you sell hotel rooms, duct tape, or dental floss. All brands are now media brands. If you produce advertising content, sales brochures, marketing messages, or any messaging that is intended to win the attention of customers, you are in the media business.
In regard to emotion, there are several proven techniques that work in media. It’s worth noting that whichever you choose, advises Spartz, figure out ways to use one or more of these techniques in tandem.
